In Dance for PD® classes, people with Parkinson’s and their families and friends explore movement and music in ways that are enjoyable, stimulating, and creative.
RIOULT Dance NY is proud to partner with the Mark Morris Dance Group to offer a pilot series of Dance for PD® classes at our new studios in Astoria starting in October 2018.
The internationally-acclaimed Dance for PD program, developed collaboratively by Mark Morris Dance Group and Brooklyn Parkinson Group, is built on one fundamental premise: professionally-trained dancers are movement experts whose knowledge, strategies, and expressive approach to moving are useful to persons with Parkinson’s. This award winning program, now in its 17th year, is appropriate for anyone with PD, no matter how advanced. No dance experience is needed. Dance for PD classes are available in ten locations around New York City and serve as a model for programs in more than 250 communities in 25 countries.
Features about the program have appeared on PBS NewsHour, NPR, CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, and Reuters, and in The New York Times and USA Today, among others. The program has been honored by several awards, including the Parkinson Awareness Award, Alan Bonander Humanitarian Award, the Sapolin Award for Public Service from the New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and the William Pearson Tolley Medal for Distinguished Leadership in Life Long Learning. Evidence from 38 peer reviewed scientific studies serves to underpin the effectiveness and benefits of the Dance for PD teaching practice.
